Forum on DC housing and poverty, with Green vice-presidential nominee
Cheri Honkala and local housing activists, Oct. 4

• An opportunity for DC voters to hear from Ms. Honkala, hosted by the
DC Statehood Green Party; free and open to the public and media

WASHINGTON, DC — Green vice-presidential nominee Cheri Honkala will
speak at a public forum on housing and poverty organized by the DC
Statehood Green Party on Thursday, October 4 at 7 pm.

Ms. Honkala, who is presidential candidate Jill Stein’s running mate
(http://www.jillstein.org), will be joined by local DC housing
activists Schyla Pondexter-Moore of Empower DC
(http://www.grassrootsmediaproject.org/tag/empower-dc), Linda Leaks,
and Eric Sheptock.

The forum will take place at Southeast Library, 403 7th Street SE in
Washington, DC, near the Eastern Market Metro Station. The event is
free and open to the public. Reporters are invited to attend.

For the past 25 years, Cheri Honkala, who was herself once homeless,
has been a leading advocate for the poor and homeless in the US. She
co-founded the Kensington Welfare Rights Union and the Poor People’s
Economic Human Rights Campaign. In 2011, Ms. Honkala ran for Sheriff
of Philadelphia on an anti-foreclosure platform. (More about Ms.

On August 1, Dr. Stein, Ms. Honkala, and three others were arrested
during a sit-in at a Philadelphia bank to protest foreclosures on
behalf of city residents struggling to keep their homes.

DC Statehood Green Party candidates running for office in the District
will also be present. The forum takes the place of the Statehood Green
Party’s monthly general assembly, which is held on the first Thursday
of every month. The Statehood Green Party has major party status in DC
and has been called the District’s “second party” based on the numbers
of votes received collectively by Statehood Green candidates in recent
elections — more than the number received by Republican candidates.
